Middle School Mathematics

COURSE I MATH

Pre-requisite: Open to all 6th grade students

Length of Course: Year

Days per Week: 5

Text: McDougal Littell: Mathematics Course 1

Course I Math builds off of the skills developed in Math 5. In this class, the students will further their study number relationships, fractions, positive and negative numbers, solving equations, decimals, ratios, percentages, proportions, word problems, geometry, data analysis, and statistics. By the end of grade 6, students are expected to master the four arithmetic operations with whole numbers, positive fractions, positive decimals, and positive and negative integers.

PRE-ALGEBRA

Pre-requisite: 7th grade students to have earned a minimum grade of B in Math 6 and a minimum score of 75% on the end of year test. Advanced 6th grade students who have earned an A grade, have teacher recommendation and a minimum score of 75% on the Math 6 end of year test.

Length of Course: Year

Days per Week: 5

Text: McDougal Littell: Mathematics: Course 2

The Pre-Algebra curriculum includes solving equations, rational numbers, percents, proportional reasoning, real numbers, solving inequalities, geometry concepts, measurement, graphing linear equations and inequalities, and polynomials. Students learn to complete operations with numbers, integers, and rational numbers.

ALGEBRA I

Pre-requisite: 7th and 8th grade students who earn a minimum grade of B in Pre-Algebra and a minimum score of 75% on the Pre-Algebra end of year test, or Math 7 students who earn an A grade, and a minimum score of 75% on the Pre-Algebra end of year test.

Length of Course: Year

Days per Week: 5

Text: McDougal Littell: Algebra Concepts and Skills

Course content includes properties of real numbers, solving, graphing and writing linear equations and linear inequalities, simplifying exponents and radical expressions, adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomials while graphing exponential functions, and various other algebraic concepts. Note: A passing grade in Algebra I does notguarantee advancement to the next level of math at a high school.

ALGEBRA I Honors

Pre-requisite: Teacher recommendation (for advanced eighth grade students)

Length of Course: Year

Days per Week: 5

Text: McDougal Littell: Algebra II Concepts and Skills

Course content includes properties of real numbers, solving, graphing and writing linear equations and linear inequalities, simplifying exponents and radical expressions, adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomials while graphing exponential functions, and various other algebraic concepts at an advanced and fast pace level. Note: A passing grade in Algebra I Honors does not guarantee advancement to the next level of math at a high school.

GEOMETRY

Pre-requisite: Students who have earned a minimum grade of B in Algebra I and a minimum score of 75% on the Algebra end of year test

Length of Course: Year

Days per Week: 5

Text: McDougal Littell: Geometry Concepts and Skills

Course content includes, but is not limited to, segments and angles, congruent triangles, quadrilaterals, similarity, polygons and area, surface area, volume, and circles. Reasoning skills, proofs, theorems, corollaries, and formulas are used throughout the course. Note: A passing grade in Geometry does not guarantee automatic advancement to the next level of math at a high school.
