Sixth Grade Electives
ART 6
(Required quarter-long elective rotation option)
Sixth grade art expands on the studio skills acquired in elementary school. It introduces new techniques from a wide variety of materials including water color, acrylics and various drawing media. It reinforces the fundamentals of drawing and painting from observation, imagination, and memory, as well as design and color theory. Two-dimensional projects involve pottery that is hand-crafted, glazed and fired. Creativity, imagination, and personal expression are stressed.
GEOGRAPHY 6
(Required quarter-long elective rotation option)
This course is designed to strengthen the students' knowledge of world geography, and provides excellent support for students as they study the history of ancient civilizations in their sixth grade social studies classes.
COMPUTERS 6
(Optional quarter-long elective rotation option)
This course is designed to support students in acquiring and refining the skills needed to complete the variety of projects required of them in their various classes throughout their middle school years. This includes work in the Windows Vista Operating System as well as Microsoft Office 2007; including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
WRITING AS A RESPONSE TO FILM 6
(Optional quarter-long elective rotation option)
Students will use films and segments of films (screened in class) to explore the essential elements and characteristics of expository writing. The objective of this course is to introduce students to strategies which will aid in the construction of well-designed essays and to provide an opportunity for students to respond to film as literature. The class will give students the opportunity to write essays analyzing facets of films and how those components contribute to the film's story message.
MATH LAB 6
(Optional quarter-long elective rotation option)
This course is designed to give additional support to student's performance and achievement in mathematics. Instruction will reinforce the topics covered in their regular math class and follow similar scope and sequence. Additional support will be provided to insure the mastery of any missing or un-mastered basic skills students may require.
ADVANCED LITERATURE 6
(Optional quarter-long elective rotation option)
PRE-REQUISITE: Teacher recommendation.
Advanced Literature 6 is for students whose reading scores are within the high school range. The books or plays for this class are selected from high school required reading lists. Students will read the challenging literature in class, participate in lively discussions and may earn Accelerated Reader points for books read in class. This course is an opportunity for voracious readers to share their passion for literature.
